New survey: 69% of American Catholics believe in Real Presence

CWN Editor's Note: A new survey has found that among American Catholics who attend Mass at least once a year, 69% believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in the Eucharist.

The survey by Vinea Research, taking place as the US bishops begin a Eucharistic Revival, contrasts with a 2019 study by Pew Research, in which 69% of the respondents said that the Eucharistic elements are “symbols” of Christ.

Not surprisingly, the Vinea survey found that Catholics who attend Mass more regularly are also more likely to believe in the Real Presence. While only about half (51%) of those who went to Mass once a twice a year believe that Jesus is present in the Eucharist, that figure jumps to 81% among those who attend weekly, and 92% for those who attend Mass more than once a week.

The huge difference between the two results indicates either incompetence or a bias in the way the questions were asked. The US Bishops have a good reason (and an Apostolic duty) to run their own survey on these matters of the Faith. Another survey - from last year - indicated that 75% of American Catholics, including 75% of Hispanic Catholics, support gay "marriage." Those numbers should also be double-checked with independent survey. catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=58312
