ROMANESQUE

An architectural style prevailing in Europe from the eleventh through the thirteenth centuries. Monastic in its origins, it is marked by thick walls, basilica or Greek cross ground plans, and vaulting of wide areas, as at Cluny and Speyer. The twelfth-century invention of rib vaults provided the basis for Gothic architecture.
