Italian missionary sister beatified in Brazil
October 27, 2014
Mother Assunta Marchetti (1871-1948), an Italian missionary nun who helped found the Missionary Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo and served in Brazil, was beatified in São Paulo on October 25.
Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, read out the decree of beatification, and Cardinal Odilo Scherer presided at the beatification Mass, the Catholic television station Canção Nova reported.
Blessed Marchetti “was a nun who was exemplary in the service of orphans, of Italian immigrants,” Pope Francis said following his October 26 Angelus address. “She saw Jesus present in the poor, in the orphans, in the sick, in the migrants. Let us give thanks to the Lord for this woman, a model of tireless missionary spirit and courageous dedication in the service of charity.”
