Philippine bishops establish National AIDS Sunday

December 01, 2011

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines has established the annual commemoration of National AIDS Sunday on the first Sunday of December.

“Though the incidence of HIV infection and AIDS in the Philippines remains at a relatively low level next to Thailand and African nations where figures ballooned following massive condom use campaigns, there are still Filipinos who live with the disease and who need support and compassion,” according to the bishops’ news agency.

On December 4, “representatives of HIV-positive communities, families and civil society” will meet at the University of Santo Tomas and “form a human AIDS ribbon as an expression of commitment to stop the spread of the virus, to eliminate the stigma associated with the disease, and to be in solidarity with persons living with HIV and AIDS.”

The activity will conclude with Mass.
